Looking down the Valley from near Blue LakeThe trail to Boivin Lake (locally know as Blue Lake) is an excellent late summer and fall ride that covers a range of geography from the foothills to an alpine setting. Depending on the season it holds the added attraction of ripe huckleberries or golden larch in addition to its year round red, green, and steel blue colors of the surrounding Purcell Rock. This is a great ride for its variety of wildflowers and its open view that lets you take in the wonderful scenery.
Once at the well site the trail starts as a gentle doubletrack that climbs for 5.7 kilometres.  Roughness, rocks and steep sections are more prevalent as you climb up to the cirque holding Blue Lake. Serious climbing begins at about the 2-km. mark.
Blue Lake is a spectacular blue color that contrasts with the multi-colored slopes of Drywood Ridge. The lake is a favourite of some local fishermen. You might want to bring along your tackle. For the hardcore mountain biker the climb to the saddle gives you an incredible view especially if you climb either of the ridges on its sides. If you continue over the saddle you arrive in the South Castle River Valley after navigating a difficult singletrack down into the South Castle Valley. The singletrack lands you about 25-km south of the start of the South Castle Valley Road near Beaver Mines Lake. Those pursuing the Saddle option to the South Castle Road should arrange a pickup point on the South Castle Road.
