The trail near the junction with Scarpe CreekDepending on how badly you want to treat you vehicle the starting options are numerous, but we recommend starting near the cattle gate at about 4.4 km from the start of the old logging road. Unlike most trails in the area the South Castle trip begins with a decent and then levels off, except for a couple ups, for the rest of the way. Remember this for the way back, as this trail is one of the few that takes about as long to go into as it does to come out of -- no real gravity advantage is gained. Along the way there are numerous options including the Whistler Fire Lookout, Grizzly Creek, the climb over the saddle to South Drywood Creek and more, the easiest route is to continue to the top of the valley and then to walk up to the South Castle Divide (no view) or the Avion Ridge (spectacular view). Most washouts were repaired in the fall of 1997.
