Crowsnest Pass X-C Ski Association NewsCrowsnest Pass Cross Country Association February, 2006 Newsletter Potential Threat From Logging in the Allison Creek Recreation AreaAlthough our ski venue is a Provincial Recreation Area, it is located within the C5 Forest Management Unit and lacks any formal status to protect it from logging activity. Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (ASRD) has produced a Draft Harvest Sequence for the C5 that shows extensive logging within the trail system. We have responded by writing a letter to ASRD asking that the Recreation Area and a proposed expansion area be removed from the harvest plan, and offering to work with them to protect our venue and to manage it for its recreation values.Annual General Meeting News HighlightsØ The membership voted to join Cross Country Alberta (a division of Cross Country Canada) in order to obtain their excellent Sports Liability Insurance package, including Officers and Directors insurance. Other benefits of membership include being a member of Canada’s cross country ski community, raising our profile and the potential to attract new members, and providing support for Canada’s National Ski Team. The cost of insurance will be recovered from members as part of the annual membership renewal process.Ø Alberta Sustainable Resource Development has implemented a regulation to prohibit dogs (and horses!) on the trails during the ski season.Ø The Memorial Benches program is under way with three benches on order and one confirmed sale.Ø Neil Chalmers and Bill Paton were re-elected as President and Secretary-Treasurer; Dave Welsh, Henry Radtke, George Kolibas, and Rick Somerville were reelected as Directors, and Karola Michalsky was elected as a Director. Ian Brown and Eva Welsh were elected as Auditors.2006 Trail ConditionsDue to much warmer than normal weather and a rain event on January 30, the snow cover at the venue is below normal. This has made grooming the trails very challenging for our grooming contractor, Barry Remus. Your understanding and patience during this difficult period has been most appreciated. |
