Coleman

In 1903 Coleman was founded with the formation of the International Coal and Coke Company. The town's initial deeds restricted the sale of alcohol for 15 years as the founders' wanted a model mining community however by the end of 1904 two hotels were serving booze. Extensive fires in 1905 caused the residents to build a modern fire hall and water system. With over 40 nationalities represented in the local schools, residential districts in Coleman tended to be settled by ethnic origin. Districts became known by names such as Italian Town and Slavtown. Coleman businesses thrived until 1983 when Coleman Collieries closed. Today Coleman is on the rebound with numerous home businesses and the revival of Coleman's downtown and highway business districts.
