Burmis

In 1898 this community was originally known as the flag stop of Livingstone on the CPR line. The residents of Livingstone complained to the federal government and the name Burmis resulted from a petition of protest over the name. The name was derived from a combination of the first two names on the petition - Robert Burn and Jack Kemis. Burmis became an important marshalling yard that was staffed around the clock. It was the base for the pusher trains required to help push fully laden coal trains over the hump at Lundbreck on the way to their eastern destinations. Burmis was also the site of Davenport Coal that operated between 1910 and 1914. It later became the home of the very successful Burmis Lumber Company that operated until 1966. In 1968 Rinke and Sons Lumber Company purchased the site and continued operations until 1997. Burmis is now home to over 100 country acreages.
